May 14:  Botanic Garden at OSU “Walk and Talk” series, 7:00 – 7:45 am, Botanic Garden at OSU.  Start your Tuesday mornings off with a little exercise and a peaceful state of mind by strolling through the gardens with Laura Payne, The Botanic Garden Volunteer/Educator Coordinator.  Each week we will check out what’s new and blooming in the garden. We walk anywhere from 1 – 3 miles on the TBG trails.  Location:  The Botanic Garden at OSU Highway 51 Entrance  Free and open to the public.

May 15: Da Vinci Code author to be featured in live streaming program, 6:30pm at the Stillwater Public Library. The event, “An Evening of Codes, Symbols, and Secrets,” will be Dan Brown’s only appearance for the release of his new book, “Inferno,” which will out on May 14. Brown will discuss the new novel, along with issues of science, religion, codes, book publishing, movie making, and a few surprise topics.  The event will be shown on the library’s new video conferencing equipment received through a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries last year. For more information about the free event or to ask about using the library’s videoconferencing system, visit the library’s webpage at http://library.stillwater.org, call 405-372-3633 or email askalibrarian@stillwater.org.

 

May 15 – 16:  Food Labeling Workshop, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Food & Agricultural Products Center, 2^nd Floor, OSU Campus.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Regulatory Affairs and the Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center will hold a public Food Labeling Workshop to provide information about FDA food labeling regulations and other related subjects to the regulated industry, particularly small businesses and startups.  Topics to be discussed at the workshop include; (1)Mandatory label elements, (2) Nutrition labeling requirements, (3) Health and nutrition claims, (4) Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004, and (5) Special labeling issues such as exemptions.  Registration:  Cost: $400 – A $25 fee will be billed to those who fail to cancel or attend.  Parking, lunch, snacks, and a workbook are included in the cost.  A certificate will be presented to each participant upon completion of the workshop.  Seats are limited.  Course space will be filled in order of receipt of registration.  Those accepted into the course will receive confirmation.  Registration will close after the course is filled.  Registration at the site is not guaranteed but may be possible depending on space availability.  Register (Visa, MasterCard, Cash or Checks Accepted), or call Karen Smith at 405-744-6277 to pay by phone.

May 17 – 19:  Stillwater’s Three Amigo’s United Way Golf Classic Dinner and Auction.  This year’s United Way Golf Classic is May 17-19, including dinner on Friday night, May 17, at the Wes Watkins Center on the OSU Campus and two days of golf on May 18 & 19 at Stillwater Country Club and Lakeside Golf Courses in Stillwater.  Registration deadline is May 10. May 17 – 18:  Texas Map Society Spring 2013 Meeting, Edmon Low Library, OSU Campus.  Join the Texas Map Society in Stillwater, Oklahoma, as this year’s theme, “Indian Territory Maps: The Early Years” will be co-sponsored by OSU’s Edmon Low Library and the Texas Map Society. Registration will be handled by the Texas Map Society.  Friday will consist of a bus trip to Enid, OK to visit the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage center followed by an evening at the Edmon Low Library with a presentation and tour.  Saturday will consist of speakers covering Indian migrations and developments throughout the territory.  For more information visit:  http://www.texasmapsociety.org/events.html

May 18:  Botanic Garden at OSU Open House, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Botanic Gardens at OSU.  Why not grab your family and friends and head out to The Botanic Garden during open house?  You will be greeted by our friendly Ambassadors who are eager to help answer your gardening and plant questions.  If entering The Botanic Garden from the Highway 51 entrance, stroll 1/4 of a mile on the scenic trail from the parking lot into the heart of the display garden.  During Open Houses, the gate is open at our Virginia Street entrance and you can park in the internal parking lot.

May 18:  The Botanic Garden Kids Look, Learn, See-Them-Grow Series, 10:00 – 11:00 am, Botanic Gardens at OSU.  Mr. McGregor’s Vegetable Garden recommended for ages 6 – 12.  Prepare and plant a vegetable garden dedicated to the children’s program.  Get those hands dirty preparing the soil, planting, mulching, and watering!  Then, return home with an understanding of ideas for one’s personal vegetable garden.  Cost $5/child  Pre-registration is required.  Contact Laura Payne to register laura.payne@okstate.edu or call 405-744-4531.

May 8 – 10:  44^th Annual Special Olympics Summer Games, All day event, OSU Campus.  Athletes will begin arriving in town in the morning.  Opening Ceremonies will take place at Gallagher Iba Arena.  Doors will open at 6:30 pm with pre-show entertainment.  Official Opening Ceremonies begin at 7:30 pm with the traditional Parade of Athletes.  Hundreds of volunteers are needed to plan, organize and accomplish a successful Summer Games.  People interested in volunteering should contact the State Office at 918-481-1234. or email info@sook.org

Duncan St.  Join the Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History and other area museums as we celebrate Oklahoma Museums Week!  The Oklahoma Museums Association and Oklahoma Arts Council are joining with Oklahoma museums, historical societies, historic sites, zoos and botanical gardens, historic houses, living history museums, tribal cultural centers and other cultural organizations and museum-related institutions statewide to celebrate Oklahoma Museums Week, May 12-18.  Oklahoma Museums Week is dedicated to celebrating the rich variety of museums in Oklahoma, their contributions to the economy, civic and cultural life and the unique, personal experiences museums offer visitors each and every day. Governor Mary Fallin has been asked to proclaim Oklahoma Museums Week as a time for communities to recognize Oklahoma museums and the contributions they make to preserve Oklahoma’s rich culture. Oklahoma legislators as well as OMA members will receive a museums advocacy piece in early May. Oklahoma Museums Week is sponsored in part by Loretta Y. We will provide our participants with the materials needed to make Mom a card and a bouquet, while she strolls through the beautiful and peaceful gardens.
