T&G summer musical to open June 5

Stillwater’s Town & Gown Theatre will open its summer musical, “Radio Gals,” the first week of June.

This fun production, set in the late 1920’s, features an enterprising woman, Hazel Hunt, of Cedar Ridge, Arkansas.

Upon her retirement as the town music teacher, Hazel receives a Western Electric 500 watt radio transmitter and begins broadcasting as radio station WGAL. What comes out over the local airwaves is a small town diary, calendar, and stream of consciousness — sort of a Molly Bloom crossed with the Farmers’ Almanac — with generous dollops of singing and playing by Hazel’s “all-girl” orchestra, the Hazelnuts, and that lovesick flapper Gladys Fritts. However, due to Hazel’s habit of “channel wandering,” her broadcasts are not always so local, as listeners as far away as Montreal and Manhattan can testify. Enter O. B. Abbott, Federal Radio Inspector, intent on rescuing the airwaves from gypsies like Hazel Hunt. However, Mr. Abbott soon falls prey to the blandishments of the Hazelnuts and Cedar Ridge.

“Radio Gals” was written by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick. The production is directed by Jeri Seefeldt, with Cody Whittenburg providing musical direction.

The show opens Wednesday, June 5, and runs for 10 performances. Show dates are June 5-9 and 12-16.

Cast members are: Linda Thrasher (Hazel Hunt), Vance Black (Mr. Abbott), Leigh Murray (Gladys), Shannon DeYong (America), and Valerie Thrasher (Rennebell).
Debbie Sutton, Lynette Erwin, and Ginger Thomas portray the Swindle Sisters, and Billy McCollom is featured as “The Leader of the Band.”

Tickets for Radio Gals will go on sale Monday, June 3. Individual tickets may be reserved by calling the Town & Gown box office at (405) 372-9122 or by visiting www.myticketscene.com. Please leave a message if no one is available to answer your call and your call will be returned promptly. Fifteen minutes before show time, all reserved tickets not yet paid for will be released for sale.

Ticket prices are: Adults – $14; Students – $12; Seniors – $12 (available for Sunday matinees only).

Show times are: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m.

BBBS Board Member Jason Matzke supported the agency by forming a State Farm Bowl for Kids’ Sake team to help with fundraising.

“Start Something” with Big Brothers Big sisters

Volunteer to Support At-Risk Children

Making an impact is the focus at the Stillwater office of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma (BBBSOK). Providing professionally supported caring adult role models for children who need mentoring is their mission, with the ultimate goal being to empower children to achieve success.

Carrying out this mission is made possible through the efforts of community volunteers who assist with the connections, partnerships and resource development that make funding and supporting an agency like BBBS possible. Those interested in learning more about how to get involved were invited to an informal event recently to learn how to “Start Something” with BBBS and support one-to-one mentoring for at-risk children in the community.

“Start Something” with BBBSOK is an agency campaign that focuses on “starting” a relationship with a child who needs a positive role model in one of two ways – either by being a mentor or by supporting the agency with connections and financial resources, recognizing the fact that stepping in to volunteer is making a difference in the life of every child served and has the potential to change lives for the better, forever.

BBBSOK Board Chair, Kerri Faw Faw explains, “As we approach people about serving on our board or on one of our committees, we want them to be aware of who and what it is they are supporting. The children we serve need the positive role model of a Big Brother or Big Sister to provide support and friendship, be a role model and help them evaluate their actions and make wise choices in life, and we also want them to have fun together. Many of our Littles come to us with challenges that they shouldn’t have to deal with in their young lives.”

The agency has several positions open on the board and is looking for people in the community to step into a leadership role that has a long-term, life-changing impact on a child’s life. Studies show that mentoring starts something positive and impactful in a child’s life and BBBS is one of the leaders in the nation for providing mentoring that has a measurable long-term impact.

Faw Faw adds, “Our staff is able to document that after a certain period of time in our program, these children become stronger in their decision-making skills, have a better sense of their future and have a better relationship with their peers.”

Volunteers and donors are the keys to sustaining agencies like BBBS and allowing them to serve an at-risk population. This includes children of incarcerated parents, which make up nearly half of the children currently served in the Stillwater area.

BBBSOK served 140 children in Stillwater last year, and with seven offices across the state, more than 1,800 children were provided with one-to-one mentoring by the agency statewide. For more information on how to get involved as a volunteer board member or as a Big, contact the Stillwater office at (405) 624-9922.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma is a donor-supported volunteer organization that provides children facing adversity with a caring adult mentor and friend who, through a professionally supported relationship, stand in the gap to change their lives. In 2012, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma served more than 1,800 children. Independent research shows that the positive relationships between youth in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters have a direct, measurable and lasting impact on children’s lives. The program is proven to improve children’s odds for succeeding in school, behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugs and alcohol and breaking negative cycles.
